Weight Management
What is weight management?
Weight management is the practice of maintaining a healthy weight through a combination of diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes. It can include losing weight, gaining weight, or maintaining weight, depending on an individual’s needs and goals. The goal of weight management is to reach and maintain a healthy weight, which can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.
Common Weight management issues
There are several common weight management issues that individuals may face:
- Difficulty losing weight: Some people may find it challenging to lose weight despite making dietary and lifestyle changes. This can be due to a variety of factors such as slow metabolism, hormonal imbalances, or genetics.
- Yo-yo dieting: This refers to the cycle of losing and gaining weight repeatedly. This can be harmful to both physical and mental health and can make it harder to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
- Emotional eating: Many people turn to food to cope with emotions such as stress, anxiety, or depression. This can lead to overeating and weight gain.
- Lack of motivation: Maintaining weight loss requires a long-term commitment and it can be difficult to stay motivated.
- Lack of support: Losing weight can be difficult, having a support system can help you stick to your goals.
- Plateau: Some people may hit a weight loss plateau after losing a certain amount of weight. This can be frustrating and may make it harder to reach their goals.
- Undereating: Some people may be too restrictive with their food intake, leading to nutrient deficiencies, which can affect overall health.
- Skipping meals: Skipping meals may lead to overeating later in the day, which can make it harder to control calorie intake and maintain weight loss.
It’s important to remember that weight management is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and it may require working with a healthcare provider or a nutritionist to find an individualized approach that works best for you.
An increasing number of people with obesity issues in Singapore
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2020, worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 650 million were obese.
In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that as of 2020, about 42% of adults have obesity. Similarly, in the United Kingdom, the National Health Service (NHS) reports that as of 2020, about 28% of adults have obesity.
Obesity is a growing public health concern in Singapore as well. According to the Health Promotion Board (HPB) of Singapore, the prevalence of obesity in Singapore has been steadily increasing in recent years.
In 2018, the National Health Survey (NHS) conducted by the Ministry of Health (MOH) reported that about 11% of Singapore residents aged 18 years and above had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more, which is considered as obese.
The HPB also reported that more than 60% of Singapore residents aged 18 and above were overweight or obese in 2020. This is an increase from the 53% reported in 2014.
It’s important to note that obesity is not only a cosmetic issue, but it’s a serious health condition that is associated with many chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and heart disease among others.
To tackle this issue, the government of Singapore has implemented various programs such as “Eat Better, Live Better” and “Move More, Live More” to promote healthy eating and physical activity among Singaporeans.

How can hypnotherapy help in weight management?
Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses hypnosis to access the subconscious mind to make positive changes in a person’s thoughts, behaviours, and emotions. Some people use hypnotherapy as a tool to help them manage their weight.
Hypnotherapy may be helpful in weight management by:
- Changing negative thought patterns: Hypnotherapy can help individuals identify and change negative thoughts and beliefs about food and their body image. This can make it easier to adopt healthy eating habits and a positive body image.
- Reducing emotional eating: Hypnotherapy can be used to address the underlying emotional issues that may lead to emotional eating. This can help individuals find healthier ways to cope with their emotions and reduce their tendency to turn to food for comfort.
- Increasing motivation: Hypnotherapy can be used to increase an individual’s motivation to lose weight and make healthier lifestyle choices. This can make it easier for them to stick to their weight loss plan.
- Improving self-esteem: Weight loss and improved body image can boost self-esteem and hypnotherapy can help to improve self-esteem.
- Changing habits: Hypnotherapy can help individuals change longstanding habits that may be contributing to their weight gain, such as overeating or a lack of physical activity.
It’s important to note that hypnotherapy is not a magic solution for weight loss, and it is not a substitute for healthy eating and regular physical activity.
It may be helpful as an adjunctive therapy to support weight management when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise. It is always best to consult with a qualified professional before undergoing hypnotherapy.
Laparoscopic gastric banding is a weight-loss procedure. Your upper stomach is banded by the surgeon to form a tiny pouch that can contain food. By making you feel full after consuming small amounts of food, the band restricts the amount of food you can consume. The procedure via keyhole and is less invasive, after the procedure patient can tighten or loosening the band with saline solution.
An alternative to Laparoscopic gastric-band is a procedure call Hypno-band. This system is an approach that combines hypnosis with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help you examine, analyse, and modify your eating patterns. After that, we apply a “virtual gastric band” to your stomach using the mind-body link to encourage you to eat less frequently.
DASETi is a Hypno-band ™ provider in Singapore. For information on Hypno-band contact us via whatsapp.
Causes of Obesity
Obesity is a complex condition that is caused by a combination of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and environment. The most common causes of obesity are:
- Energy imbalance: Obesity occurs when an individual takes in more calories than they burn through physical activity and metabolism. This leads to the storage of excess calories as fat, which can accumulate over time and cause weight gain.
- Genetics: Obesity tends to run in families, which suggests that there is a genetic component to the condition. Studies have identified several genes that are associated with obesity. However, genetic factors alone do not fully explain the development of obesity.
- Lifestyle: A sedentary lifestyle and a diet high in processed foods, sugar, and saturated fat can contribute to obesity.
- Metabolic factors: Some medical conditions and medications can affect metabolism and contribute to weight gain. For example, hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can slow metabolism and lead to weight gain.
- Environmental factors: The physical and social environment can also contribute to obesity. For example, living in an area with limited access to healthy food options and safe places to exercise can make it more difficult to maintain a healthy weight.
- Socioeconomic status: Studies have shown that people with lower income and lower education level are more likely to be obese.
- Societal and Cultural factors: Societal and cultural norms can shape our understanding of food and body image, which can lead to unhealthy eating habits and weight gain.
- Psychological factors: Stress, depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions can contribute to obesity.
It’s important to note that obesity is a complex condition that is influenced by a combination of factors. Therefore, it’s not always possible to identify a single cause of obesity.
Here are some tips to prevent obesity.
Preventing obesity requires a multi-faceted approach that includes changes in diet, physical activity, and lifestyle. Here are some ways to prevent obesity:
- Eat a healthy diet: Eating a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein can help control calorie intake and promote weight loss. It is also important to limit the intake of foods high in sugar and saturated fat.
- Get regular physical activity: Regular physical activity is essential for weight management. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking, most days of the week.
- Maintain a healthy weight: It’s important to maintain a healthy weight, through monitoring BMI and body weight regularly.
- Limit sedentary behaviour: Sitting for prolonged periods can increase the risk of obesity. Try to stand up and move around every 30 minutes and make a point to get up and move around during commercial breaks while watching TV.
- Get enough sleep: Getting enough sleep is essential for maintaining a healthy weight. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
- Control stress: Chronic stress can lead to overeating and weight gain, so it’s important to find healthy ways to manage stress, such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise.
- Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption: Both smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can contribute to weight gain.
- Seek support: It can be helpful to have support from friends, family, or a healthcare professional when trying to prevent obesity.
